Over the last eight years we have been the program manager for an extensive public water supply protection program. The project was recently awarded the prestigious Source Water Protection Award by the American Water Works Association.
The program has been effective in reducing nutrient loads to the reservoir by 20%, and it has increased the life expectancy of the reservoir by 12 years by reducing sediment loads. The program has also led to the delisting of aquatic algae and manganese as EPA regulatory impairments.
Results will reduce water treatment costs over time and mitigate costly treatment plant upgrades. The water quality and aquatic health of the lake has also increased, and recreational opportunities are stronger than they have been in years due to reduced algae issues.
