Northwater supported Lake County in developing a large-scale, watershed-based plan.  The project was unique and challenging due to its size and jurisdictional complexity and the area’s persistent flooding and water quality issues, specifically, chloride.

Roles included developing an action and implementation plan focused on improving water quality, reducing flooding, and developing/preserving green infrastructure.  Northwater compiled and integrated other subwatershed plans (two of which were completed previously by Northwater), current and historical water quality and streamflow data, developed water quantity and quality models, and identified over 3,000 implementation projects. Measurable improvements and benefits associated with recommended actions were calculated and a flood damage and flood problem area assessment was completed.  A critical area analysis was also performed using advanced geospatial analysis.

Northwater also completed a flow and load duration analysis, a monitoring strategy, and coordinated with local stakeholders.  The project was completed under a very aggressive schedule with an uncharacteristically low number of changes required by the IEPA.
