Synopsis

The North Mill Creek/Dutch Gap watershed is located in northern Lake County, Illinois and Southern Kenosha County, Wisconsin. Streams and natural lakes in the watershed are under pressure from urban development and nutrient runoff. Northwater helped to complete an action-specific watershed-based plan with hundreds of feasible projects, modeled to maximize water quality benefits. Since plan completion, a number of these projects have been implemented.

Project Description

Northwater assisted Lake County in finalizing a watershed-based implementation plan. The project was unique and challenging due to its location in both Illinois and Wisconsin.

Roles included developing an action and implementation strategy and plan in addition to performing advanced GIS analysis and mapping. Northwater built a custom GIS-based pollution load model, identified over 150 site-specific projects and calculated the expected pollution load reductions. Northwater also conducted a critical area analysis using GIS, a field assessment of watershed conditions, and coordinated with local landowners and stakeholders.
